Jefferson is one week old today and doing really well.
Favorite Things- sleeping, and eating. Ohhh and peeing, especially on unsuspecting Mommy and Daddy.
Things He is Not Crazy About- waiting for his bottle, getting his diaper changed.
First Outing- Pediatrician's office 48 hours after hospital discharge, where he was declared to be in perfect health and gaining weight. Jef and I really like his Pediatrician. He is a professor at UNC with over 30 years experience. Here are some interesting facts he shared with us:
- During the first month babies do not have Melatonin and their days and nights are reversed due to hormones. This is due to cavemen times when babies needed to keep their parents alert to protect them. This will regulate within a month or so.
- Another throwback from cavemen days, babies with cold hands got picked up more often and were more likely to survive. This is why they try and wiggle out a hand from being covered so that it will be cold and parents will be more likely to snuggle with their babies. His advice.... you can't hold a baby too much.
- Pediatricians don't know why babies hiccup.
- Everyone knows that you have to sanitize/wash your hands before touching a baby, but did you know that soap and water is better than hand sanitizer?
Here are some of his latest pictures. More to come!
First Smile
And if you were wondering is he is really smiling.......Babies can smile at birth, or even sooner -- ultrasounds have actually spotted upside-down frowns on babies in the last trimester of pregnancy. What's unclear is why they do it so early on. "Some research shows that they smile most often as they're falling asleep and waking up," says Alan Fogel, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and author of Infancy: Infant, Family and Society. "Those times are probably inherently pleasurable for babies, and their good feelings seem to create a smile."

I bet he is smiling because he is so glad to have two wonderful parents! I LOVE the photos and loved the info from your pediatrician! Looking forward to your next post!
